48th Rifle Cottage at Long Branch Range

48th Cottage at the Long Branch Rifle Range

A 6 inch (15.24 cm) by 10.5 inch (26.67 cm) black and white photo of some 48th members lounging on the front porch of the 48th Highlanders Long Branch Rifle Range Cottage.  The 48th cottage provided equipment storage and a place to change clothing and relax during shooting. Those who wished extra practice could go at any time with the permission of the musketry instructor or a member of the Rifle committee.

The 48th Highlanders began to shoot at Long Branch Ranges in 1893. Travel to the ranges was by train, and Saturday was the only day available for practice. As many of the men worked at least half a day on Saturday and as they were required to pay their own train fare, attendance was fifty or fewer at the beginning. In 1896 the train fare was lowered for militia troops and two years later the use of the rifle gallery (indoor ranges) in the new University Avenue Armouries became a routine.
